catching up
- I've been being pretty lazy lately and that includes blogging and commenting. I hope everyone enjoyed all the guest posts, hopefully I can continue working in guest posts in the future so please if you are ever interested let me know!
- Today is my last day of total freedom. My first day of grad school classes is tomorrow evening. Then next week I start the two undergrad classes I am taking at a local community college. So basically June through about half of July I am going to have class all day and all evening Monday-Thursday. It will be busy but I am excited!
- I have started having these dreams...which I haven't had in a while but always start when I am doing something new. I'm always at a school...usually my high school...and I either have to take a test and haven't studied or I'm lost and don't know what class I am supposed to be in. Weird!
- What did everyone think of Sex and the City 2? To be honest I was a little let down...I mean, it was entertaining and all but not much there in terms of plot.

Curiosities: Tracie
Cee asked me to write about something that I find curious, or random, or strange. I have something that is all three. Leashes. I'm sure there are reasons for pulling out that leash. Safety is one. I can imagine lots of people pointing out that they use leashes for safety reasons. It keeps the little ones from running away. That is all good and fine, but what happens when they turn the leashes on you?
When my husband, Thomas, and I were first married we flew from Florida to Arizona to have our second wedding with my mom's family. We had a layover in the Houston Airport. While we were there we saw this woman. She was traveling with her four kids and it didn't seem to be going very well. The first time we noticed her she was walking through the airport with all four kids attached to her by leashes. She had a suitcase and although three of the kids were walking (none of them were babies) one of them was definitely closer to being dragged.
The three kids who were walking weren't much improvement on the "dragged" kid, because the three "walkers" were all trying to walk in different directions! It made me think of those old western movies when the townsfolk would get really angry at a guy and threaten that he might be drawn and quartered. I could just see this poor woman being pulled in three different directions!
She finally corralled all four kids into the bathroom (these western words are really working for me today) and we didn't see them for a long time.
Finally, after a long wait, it was time for our plane to board. We got in line and Thomas started tapping me and said, "Look! It is the lady with the leashes!"
What I saw when I turned my head........I have wished ever since that I had had a camera with me that day. It needs photographic explanation. It was just so crazy! So crazy in fact, that I decided that since I don't have a photograph I would just have to draw you a picture. Nothing short of that will do.
There she was. One kid trying to escape while simultaneously having wrapped his leash around another one's neck. Two of the kids had run around her in circles and the mom was unable to move due to being tied up. The last kid......this was the one who was being dragged earlier......had climbed on top of a telephone booth that was mounted to the wall! To this day Thomas and I are unsure how he managed to get up there. We had to catch our flight, so I never have known what happened to that mother with all the leashes. I imagine that she might still be there at the airport all these years later tied up and stuck under that phone booth, but hopefully she was able to make it to her airplane.
I had never given leashes much though before this incident. On that day, Thomas and I decided that we were not leash parents. It is just too dangerous. You might be able to use that leash to keep your kid attached to you.....but you never know when they might turn on you and tie you up with it!
Thanks Tracie! I have a vague memory of my mom having me on a leash when I was about 3 or so...but I'm pretty sure she would deny it now!

Curiosities: The Non-Student
Relationship Curiosities
I started my blog Grad-Student Girlfriend about a year ago when SCL (my now sort of former ex-beau with whom I have an ambiguous “relationship”, nicknamed Summa Cum Laude) and I were about to move to Washington, D.C. and start our new life together as PhD student (him) and non-profit do-gooder (me). I was completely naïve about the adventure lying ahead of me, not only with my job (which I totally hated and ended up leaving six months later) but also with my now live-in partner. Little did I know that within the course of the year, I’d go from expecting an engagement ring (round-cut with halo and pave band) to getting dumped out of nowhere with no explanation and then a month later, be approached by SCL wanting to try again…but living at different addresses.
Our most intimate relationships are curiosity-invoking things to me because of what they tell us about ourselves, oftentimes things we don’t want to see. The difficulty, at least for me, is admitting that whatever is going on, good or bad, isn’t just about the other person. It’s also about me. Apparently I am capable of being annoyingly needy one minute and completely independent the next. One moment I am planning to ruin SCL’s life and the next I am willing to drop everything in my own life to make him happy. I’m shocked at the intensity and breadth of my emotions. Sometimes it makes me feel like a total psycho. When SCL and I were broken up, I went on a mini-rampage in our apartment, tearing up little things of his, pouring out his expensive bottle of cognac down the kitchen sink, and contemplating much, much worse.
And I’m constantly surprised by SCL’s behavior, which I find totally bizarre. Example A: if boyfriend breaks up with girlfriend, then gets back together with her, then wants to move out but stay together, should boyfriend then ask girlfriend to repay him for couch that boyfriend and girlfriend paid together for? Answer: HELLS NO! I’m amazed by his lack of emotional sensitivity, that unlike me he doesn’t consider my feelings and desires in every single thing he says and does. Sometimes he just does what’s best for him.
Why is this so impossible for me, doing what’s best for me? I think it’s a product of my upbringing, of having an altruistic mother with a martyr complex who would give of herself completely and then resent it. And whether I like it or not, she’s the model I grew up with. I’ve learned that loving another means giving into the other, even if it’s not good for me. I’m trying to change this though. Lately I’ve been thinking in terms of what I need (mostly because I have a therapist who figuratively beats this into my head) and what will make me satisfied. And now that SCL and I won’t be living together, I am a lot less responsible for him, which means more freedom for me. Oh, and I won’t be giving him a damn cent for that couch.
Thanks to TNS for the post! And for the record...I am totally in favor of not paying him for the couch!

Curiosities: Ashley from Kiwis and Cocktails
So without further ago I give you the fabulous Ashley from Kiwis and Cocktails. Enjoy!
"Curiosity Didn’t almost Kill the cat, but It did make her Hallucinate."
First, I am honored and happy that Cee asked me to be a guest poster. This is MY VERY FIRST Guest post! I picked my brain apart trying to think of a story from my life that illustrated the theme of "Curiosity". I am a curious person by nature, but this particular episode in my life taught me a lesson: Listen to people when they suggest you should not eat something.
I studied abroad in New Zealand during my college years. I lived in dorm style flat. I had 5 other flatmates: A boy from Germany (VERY VERY CUTE), Boy from Kenya, Girl from America (Grew up in Philly, but went to college in VT), Boy from America (Colorado I think), Kiwi girl (from NZ) who had a shaved head. The Kenyan and the Kiwi had already lived in this same flat for a year before the rest of us arrived for that semester. They had just said goodbye to 4 other international students. There was also an RA for the whole dorm flat building. His name was Ragu. Yes, like the spaghetti sauce. I don’t think NZ has Ragu sauce, so this was only funny to us Americans.
Now, Ragu was a bit of the “supplier” around campus if you know what I mean. Well, in case you don’t know what I mean- He sold the herbs. Something to note, some of the students at this University were 17 and some were in their mid to late twenties, depending on their programs and studies. I had a few “older” students in my flat. Regu was not only the “dealer”, but he was also “OLD” in comparison. Looking back, he was probably like 26. My Kiwi flatmate was a huge stoner. All the time. I kind of assumed it was legal or decriminalized there, since she did it so much. I mean, the drinking age is 18, so this sounded plausible?
After I met my Kiwi boyfriend, I stayed at his house sometimes. In the beginning, he would drop me off at my flat at 7:30 AM on his way to work. My first class was not until 10:30 on most mornings, so I would go back to bed when he dropped me off! Sometimes I would watch my American shows on my laptop while lying in my dorm twin size bed (some smart American kids networked the shows-t his was before the day when you could go to abc.com or hulu.)
After dating my kiwi boyfriend for a while, he taught me how to drive his “spare car”. They drive on the other side of the road over there and the steering wheel is on the other side too. Learning this is feat within itself. I would go to turn on the blinker, and the windshield wipers would start going! But, this car was the same YEAR as me. Ya, no wonder my boyfriend let me use it! It was worth $200.00 tops! (In my opinion) Oh, did I mention it was not only a standard, but it HAD A CHOKE to start it! Like, from the olden days. I grew up learning to drive a stick shift, but it was hard getting used to the stick on the left of me instead of the right. Also, I had to put fluids in it every day after driving it. On the mornings I drove myself to school in the car he called “The Great White” because it was white, I would get up slowly and make my breakfast. I loved going through all his food cabinets and eating lots of food. Sometimes , I would get up, get a bowl of ice cream (NZ ice cream is VERY creamy and different) and go back to bed for a bit. It was still that stage where you don’t want to be Miss Piggy around your new boyfriend? You know? So, I Just decided to be a closet eater and eat all the food that I had seen in the cabinets since I started going to his house. And, I always woke up starving because I didn’t eat a lot of dinner around him. You know- trying to impress? I was young and dumb, what can I say?
One night , the boyfriend and I were going through one of his cabinets looking for some papers. Well, he was looking, I was being nosy. I saw this beautiful tin on the shelf. I asked him what was in the tin. He looked at me and told me the tin was his flatmates’. Boyfriend rented out a room in his house to his workmate who needed a place to stay. He opened up the tin, and I saw cookies!! Then, boyfriend put them back on the shelf and told me they were NOT cookies I wanted to eat.
Hm. Weird.
A week or so goes by, and I was looking in the cabinet for food before going to school. I opened up that tin and took 2 cookies. I wrapped them in a napkin and tossed them in the front of my book bag.
A couple weeks pass. Boyfriend dropped me off at school early in the morning. I was going back to bed before my class. First, I dumped out my book bag looking for my cell phone. OH, damn it! I forgot about those cookies! They were broken! I stuffed a few pieces in my mouth…just to get rid of the mess. I know- who does that? I was so sanitary.
I went to bed.
I dreamed very weird things.
I woke up and attempted to go to the bathroom. I could barely walk. I had to walk down the flat hall with my hands on the walls. My other flatmates were up getting ready for school. They knew I had come home that morning and asked if I was drunk. I had NO idea what was going on. I thought my shaved head roommate was trying to make out with me. She was not. I thought my Kenyan roommate was speaking a different language to me. He was not. The rooms were spinning. I was seeing birds- I was ducking. I was hallucinating.
I went back to bed and skipped my first class. There was no way I could go like this!I got up for my next class. I met 2 of my fellow American classmates for the walk over to our NZ Politics class. I told the two boys about the cookies and how it was a mistake. And, I was scared. Not that this part of the story is entirely relevant, but one of my classmates I confessed to is the nephew of a previous American President. (Speaking of, I think he unfriended me from Facebook!) No one at school really knew "who" he was, but if any dummy looked at his full name, it was pretty damn obvious. Well, I did. I figured it out after meeting him for 2 days, but I am just smart like that and I know my stuff! And, we were in TWO politics classes together in a country that hated American politics at the time! Oh, that part was fun…especially when high on cookies!
It was a rough morning/day for me, and everyone knew it from taking a two second look at me!
The best part, or maybe worse, is when I convinced the RA, Ragu, that America sent me over to investigate him, and I worked for the American DEA. Yes, I did. I accused him of his antics in front of A LOT of people, and discussed my DEA agenda for a good 30 minutes.
I didn’t show my face in that flat complex for weeks. I hid at boyfriend’s house and only went to campus for classes, then immediately left.
On the very last day of school , I apologized to good ole Regu. I told him I would send any future American stoners his way when they arrived on campus.
That was the end of my herbal cookie days, and my curiosity of crusty old baked goods in pretty tins. I ended up telling my boyfriend what happened a long time after. His response, "I told you, you didn't want to eat THOSE cookies. haha. How were they?"
I love this story because it is so college...one of my friends actually ate a brownie she thought was "special" once but turns out it was just an overpriced brownie a frat was selling as a fundraiser. Thanks Ashley!

Curiosities: Caroline from Simply Smithwick
Today is also my first "Curiosities" guest blogger, Caroline from Simply Smithwick. In case you missed this post, over the next couple weeks some of my favorite bloggers will be sharing their funny, weird and interesting stories to go with the theme of Curiosity...I'm excited to see what they do! Caroline's story is super weird...honestly I have no clue what I would do if I came across someone like this! So now I'll shut up...here is Caroline!
Hey, everyone!! I am Caroline from Simply Smithwick. I am so excited to be doing my very first guest blogger post for Cee. I've always enjoyed reading her blog and I feel honored to be able to contribute.
So, let me start off by first saying everything I am about to tell you is 100% true. Trust me, I couldn't make this stuff up.
Ever since I was a small child, my parents have been taking me on family vacations. We've been to some pretty amazing places and we've had some pretty wild experiences, but nothing can top the people we've encountered along the way....
When I was in middle school, my family and I traveled out west to visit Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Nevada. One of our stops along the way was in Estes Park, Colorado. We decided to take a tram ride up to the top of a mountain (another tourist trap).
While we were waiting for the tram, we noticed a 50-something-year-old gentleman holding what at first glace looked like an actual baby, but later turned out to be a baby doll. We assumed he was holding it for his daughter or granddaughter who was already on the top of the mountain, but that wasn't the case.
We board the tram and it's just my family, this man, the doll, the tram guide and myself on board. On our tram ride up the mountain, the man starts talking, but he wasn't talking to us. He was talking to the doll. I remember his words, "Look here, Jimmy, you're the one who wanted to come on this trip. Now, look out the window."
We were all so shocked. The guide looked at us and we looked at her. Her voice was immediately replaced by a tape of the tour.
He kept having this argument with the doll. We feared he was going to go nuts and kill us all. When we finally reached the top of the mountain, we let him get off of the tram first and we kept a close eye on him.
We let him go back down the mountain first. On our way down, we noticed the man putting Jimmy in a car seat. To make matters worse, he was from Maine. Yes, this crazy man had driven all the way from Maine to Colorado with this doll.
We were just in shock for the remainder of the day. I don't think any of us remembered anything about the mountain or the views. We just had our eyes on Jimmy.
So later that day, we were driving through the town and we we saw the man pushing Jimmy in the stroller. Jimmy even had a hat on. We couldn't contain ourselves. We thought the morning was bad, but this was the icing on the cake.
After that, there were no more Jimmy sightings and we don't know what happened to Jimmy or the man, but we'll always have their memories.
To this day, we still talk about Jimmy and our experience. It's something that you just can't believe until it happens to you.
I hope you all have a wonderful weekend! And thank you to Cee again for allowing me to contribute!
At least he was concerned about Jimmy being safe on that long car ride? Thanks Caroline!

goodbye corporate america
Three years ago I had just graduated from college and was in full on panic mode looking for a job. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life so I took basically the first normal seeming job I was offered.
Two years ago K moved to Maryland for law school and we moved into together. Seeing him pursue his dream career made me wonder if I could even find a dream career of my own.
One and half years ago (or so) I realized that what I really wanted to do with my life.
Ten months ago I began making concert plans and applying to schools to become a teacher.
Four months ago I was accepted to LU, the school I will be attending.
Two and half weeks ago I gave my notice at my job.
Today is my last day.
It's been a long time coming, yes, but that doesn't make it seem like any less of a major change.
When I walk out of this building at the end of the day today, the building I have spent so much time in over the past three years, I won't be coming back. Tomorrow morning I will wake up and not go to work. No more counting down the minutes until 5:20 each day. No more scheduled 15 minute breaks each morning and afternoon. No more overtime. No more angry clients. No more teeny tiny cubicle. No more weird acronyms and jargon. No more micromanagement and metrics. No more paycheck (that one hurts more than a little.)
No more being unhappy with what I am doing.
The routine (and boring) life I have had since I left college is over. Time for a new start. Goodbye Corporate America.
(on a side note...my baby brother also turns 18 today...talk about change!)

i want you. i need you. oh baby. oh baby.
Not to get off topic...I have a confession to make. Lately, I have been feeling rather uninspired about this blog. So I thought and thought about what I could do to infuse some excitement and decided to jump into the mysterious world of guest blogging.
I don't have any experience with this so I'm not sure what the normal procedure is so this is how it will work here, on this lil ole blog:
If you would like to do a guest post please either a) leave a comment (and make sure you have your comments set up so I can respond to you via email or give me your email address) or b) email me at curiosity.cee@gmail.com
The guest posts will need to fit into my overall theme for this little experiment if you will, which is: Curiosities
What does this mean? I'm glad you asked.
Basically, I want to hear about what you think is strange or interesting. Or if something strange has happened to you and you want to share that works. Please feel free to talk about food, supernatural beings, apes, fashion, tv, giant squids, ex boyfriends...or whatever. I really just want this to be a fun way to find out more about you all and maybe get some more knowledge for trivia too! You don't have to tell me now what you are going to write about...just let me know if you want to do it!
Please let me know if you want to play along! All are welcome!
back from NJ
Either way it was still a good trip. On Thursday night K and I had a hotel reservation near his brother's college so we ended up just ordering room service and watching "Shutter Island," which was really good. The room service food was good too...but over priced!
The graduation was Friday morning and we went to lunch afterwards with K's brother, mom and grandfather. Then we spent the rest of the weekend with K's dad and his parents (the other grandparents.)
I had never spent much time with that side of the family so I liked getting to know them better, especially his grandma who is really sweet. They have a very male dominated family so I think she liked having a girl to hang out with!
Now I am back at work for only three more days...a little scary but overall, exciting.

random thoughts on Thursday morning
I love it! K is such a sweetie to let me have free reign over most of the decorating choices. I'm really trying to find my own style, when we first moved in together I was very concerned about keeping things semi-masculine so we have a lot of black and dark colors. Hopefully I can slowly redecorate!

Weight Watchers Wednesday: need a quick, summery dinner?
Servings: 4
1/2 cup orange juice
1/4 cup cilantro, fresh, chopped
3 Tbsp fresh lime juice
2 tsp olive oil
2 tsp minced garlic
1 tsp ground cumin
3/4 tsp table salt, or to taste
1/2 tsp black pepper, freshly ground
1 1/4 pounds uncooked boneless, skinless chicken breast, four 5-oz pieces
1 cup canned black beans, rinsed and drained
1 cup mango, fresh, cubed
2 Tbsp red onion, chopped
cooking spray
Then, to make the salsa, add beans, mango and onion to bowl with orange juice mixture; toss, cover and refrigerate.
When ready to cook, coat grill or grill pan (we used the George Foreman) with cooking spray; preheat over medium-high heat. Remove chicken from marinade; discard marinade.
Grill chicken, turning as needed, until cooked through. Transfer chicken to serving plates and spoon salsa over chicken; pour any liquid left in bottom of bowl over top. Yields 1 piece of chicken and about 1/2 cup of salsa per serving.

potty mouths
Let me preface this by saying my department shares the floor with a glorified mail room. I'm not trying to be rude, I'm sure these people work hard at their jobs, but most of them are either very ghetto, very trashy or just...weird. It's an interesting combination. To give you an idea of the type of people working there...eight of them got fired this year for dealing prescription drugs and soliciting their business using their work emails. I've also seen Micky Mouse and Elroy from the Jetsons tattooed on two different people's necks. So yea.
However, the bathroom on their side is further away from my desk...so I can waste some time walking over and back.
In the past week the following has all occurred in that bathroom:
1) A woman having a conversation with someone (loudly) on her cell phone while sitting on the toilet.
2) A woman having a conversation with herself (mumbling) while sitting on the toilet.
3) Two women having a very involved, loud, conversation about drama with other people at work while they were each sitting on (different) toilets.
4) Two women having a very involved, loud conversation about drama with other people at work while blocking the entrances to all of the stalls (and they looked at me like I was being rude when I had to squeeze through them to go in and pee.)
5) A woman straightening her hair. She wasn't on the toilet but she did spread out all her makeup and hair supplies across the sink area.
I just threw that last one in...but what I am really trying to say is...what is with all the talking? Peeing is not the time for conversations...and the one who was mumbling to herself actually scared me. Creepy.
Is it just me that finds this strange? Are public bathrooms the new hot spot for conversations?

Weight Watchers Wednesday: Quick Breakfast
Since starting WW in February I am always looking for quick things I can have for breakfast. Usually I eat in my car on the way to work or once I get to work at my desk so it's important that whatever I have is portable and will keep me full until lunch.
Smart Ones English Muffin Breakfast Sandwich---4 POINTS
I try not to go crazy with Smart Ones or Lean Cuisines because of the sodium but these are really good and simple.
These can actually be ordered online here. I really like the Roasted Onion flavor with a Laughing Cow wedge spread on it (which brings the total to only 2 POINTS.)
The Banana Bread flavor is my personal fav.
What do you eat for breakfast? Any healthy suggestions for me to try next?

lots of thoughts
This is my attempt to get some thoughts down...so I'm sorry if it doesn't make much sense. It's stream of consciousness. Or the taming of the hamster if you will.
Work is boring me. Not that it wasn't boring for the past 2 years or so, but now it is really boring. Everyone knows I am leaving, but I still have enough time here that I'm not doing any of the getting ready to leave stuff yet (packing up my desk etc...) Basically business as usual. It's kind of like limbo. At least this is my last full week, I have Friday off next week then I am only working three days the week after.
Student loans make me both happy and anxious. I always have known we were going to be paying off K's law school loans for all eternity, but now we will be adding mine to the mix as well. I am thrilled that we are both going to have the education to pursue the careers we really want and that government funding is available to help us. But it is scary to think about the number and I worry we won't be able to do other things (like buy a house) because of what we will be paying back. Is being happy in your career worth it? I think yes. Will we make it work? I think yes too. But like I said...it's still scary.
My bangs really need a trim. I've been putting it off.
K and I hit up the Home Depot over the weekend and got 9 different herbs and a jalapeno pepper plant. Our porch looks much more Spring-ish, I should take pictures. Hopefully we don't kill the plants...
Our apartment complex pool is filled with water but not open yet. It's been hot and muggy so it is taunting me.
That's all for now...

well...it's done!
This morning I literally stared a the email I had written asking her if I could meet with her sometime today. My palms were sweating and I had to force myself to press "send." Then came the hardest part...waiting for her reply. 10 minutes felt like 10 hours, no lie.
Finally she told me she had time before 10 or after 3 today and asked if I wanted to just meet right now, and I figured, why put it off all day?
Since we all have cubicles we went into one of the conference rooms and she asked me what was going on, and I told her "I'm leaving." She said "I knew it," which kind of took me by surprise but then she said 'I always assume that when someone says they need to meet with me privately."
Anyways, from there I just told her the situation and she was really nice about it. She said she was excited for me and that she thought I would be a good teacher. We talked for a little bit about teaching, going back to school etc... and she was fine with my last day being May 19th. I gave her the letter I had written and she told me how it will work with vacation days.
So really I didn't have anything to be anxious about because it really was fine! Now I have 2.5 weeks to get everything in order here and I'll be good to go.

it's the final countdown
Well in case you haven't, let me further illustrate my obsession...
I have my "official" resignation letter all printed out and signed. And hidden in my desk. Because we know the cleaning people might see it tonight and spill the beans before I can.
I have a draft of an email to my boss asking if I can meet with her at some point saved and ready to be sent as soon as I get in tomorrow. Because one sentence emails take so long to type.
Here is the problem. I have no idea what I am going to say once I get in the room with my boss. And I think blurting out "I QUIT" is considered unprofessional.
So yea, we shall see how it goes. I promise this is my last post about this...well except for when I tell you how it goes tomorrow! How could I leave you having after all this build up? It would be like blogging blue balls.
Any last words of advice?

2010 goals---April update

holding pattern
Or my life this week.
Friday I am going to tell my boss about me leaving, but until then I have to pretend there is nothing going on...and I feel bad about it. Especially today when I had my monthly "one-on-one" meeting with her to discuss my future, performance and goals and I had to somewhat (well maybe even more than somewhat) lie. I really considered just coming clean and telling her today. Which would mean risking her (or more likely her boss) forcing me leave earlier then I want and me missing out on some extra money. Which would suck. I didn't do that.
Blah.
I'm anxious about this quiting thing. Don't get me wrong, I'm super excited to actually do it. It's the conversation that makes me anxious.
Some people at work do know and I was wondering if my boss had any ideas...but after our meeting today I really think I am going to be completely taking her by surprise. The goody-goody in me has issues with that.
On another note...I know this blog has been a little ehhh lately. Blame it on the holding pattern.

rainy monday fantasy
When it is rainy on Mondays everything should shut down. No work. No traffic. No bad drivers who can't handle rain. Just relaxation.
I could sleep in as long as I want to and would wake up and magically find warm breakfast from Chick-fil-A waiting for me in the kitchen. The morning would be spent catching up on my dvr and blog reading (I'm very behind I know, sorry!) Then I would whip up some different homemade soups, eat some and freeze the rest. Take a nap. Watch a movie. Read a book.
Sigh.
That would be nice.

fortunately/unfortunately
Unfortunately Friday is also my Weight Watchers weigh in day and this morning I was up 1.8 pounds...grrr.
Fortunately I am giving my notice at work in just one week...next Friday.
Unfortunately the thought of having the "I'm quitting" conversation with my boss really scares me!
Fortunately I'm still loving the look of my new bangs.
Unfortunately I haven't quite mastered styling them (and flattening the cowlicks that always stopped me from having bangs) so sometimes they look a bit wonky (today for example.) And they could already use a trim.
Fortunately Hanna and I are going to be spending the weekend at my friend, B's house. Her bf is going to be away and K needs to study so it will be a fun girls weekend!
Unfortunately wait...there is nothing unfortunate about that!

weight watchers gourmet pizza
POINTS® Value:5
12 oz pizza dough (I just used the Pillsbury dough)
10 medium sun-dried tomatoes, without oil (I used probably about 15 of the halved ones)
3 oz hard cheese, Gorgonzola (I used one small package of the crumbled kind)
10 pieces spinach, washed and dried (I just chopped up a couple handfuls of baby spinach)
black pepper
Coat a large nonstick pan with cooking spray. Warm pan over medium heat. Add onions and reduce heat to medium-low. Cook for 15 to 20 minutes, stirring frequently, until onions brown and become very fragrant.
Meanwhile, prepare pizza crust for baking according to package directions. Mince tomatoes. Tear spinach into pieces (or chop if you are me.) Preheat oven to 425°F.
Spread caramelized onions on pizza crust and bake for 12 minutes. Remove from oven and add tomatoes, spinach and cheese. Bake until cheese is melted, about 3 more minutes. Season with freshly ground black pepper.

i got a new look!
"trying" conversations
Why is it acceptable to talk about "trying" to get pregnant whenever you want?
Now I don't mind talking about it with close friends or family. Or even blogging about it. But at work? What? Huh?
This morning my boss (and another supervisor and our admin) were having a LOUD conversation about my boss starting to "try" in two months and how long her and her husband "tried" with their first child. Right in the middle of the office.
It's not appropriate to talk about your sex life at work when you are not "trying," so why does a baby make that suddenly ok? I'm pretty sure if I was telling people how long my boyfriend and I have been "not trying," I would be visited by HR before the conversation was over.
I'm a pretty open person and I love hearing about babies and children. But hearing these conversations (or people who I am not friends with having them with me) bothers the hell out of me! And at work it's just kind of gross!
Does anyone else feel this way? Am I just being prude?

quitter
In fact, I don't think I have ever quit anything in my life. All of the jobs and internships I have had sort of just came to an end either due to me leaving (to go back to college or go to college) or it was something that only had a set time frame. I never quit any clubs or extracurricular activities either, whenever I would stop, it would always be natural and on good terms. I never even dropped a class in college.
But I will be quitting my job, at the company I have worked with since I graduated college almost three years ago, in a matter of weeks. It's so strange to think about. I'm super excited and happy (which is kind of weird...yay! I'm happy I will have no money coming in!) but I have no idea how to tell my boss.
I have kept my plans very secret so I think this will come as a big surprise to her. While I don't know the exact date I will need to tell her pretty soon to allow two weeks. School starts in June but I am taking some time off before I start to get things in order and also because I will be going out of town for a couple graduations.
I'm going to draft a letter but I don't know if I should just email her the letter or ask to meet with her and give it to her? I don't want to be rude but I also don't want to get into tons of conversations with people about why I am leaving...I'm sure many people I work with will be critical and dealing with it is annoying. Or maybe I am completely wrong.
What do you think? Has anyone ever quit a "grown up" job? How did you do it?

it's time to trust my instincts, close my eyes and leap
drum roll, please...
School #3!!!! Now to be known as LU.
As many of you know, this was not my original first choice because it will take a bit longer to complete (I should graduate in January 2012), however the more I thought about it the better it just felt to me. The fact that I will be able to work at some kind of job plus how wonderful everyone I have interacted with there definitely were major factors in my decision.
You may be wondering what happened with School #1. First I was told I was on a wait list and if they were able to find enough internship placements they would put me into the class starting this summer (they only have one small "cohort" each year for this program.) Well, they ended up not being able to accept me for this year but did offer me a spot in the 2011-2012 cohort.
Since I had already pretty much decided on LU I told them "thanks, but no thanks" and let LU know right away I would be coming there!
So now I am jumping in, making more plans and seeing where I go from here. It's very scary to think of quiting my job, borrowing money, starting school again and finding a new job (or more likely a couple small jobs) but I am excited to be pursuing my dream. I know once I have a career that I actually want and enjoy all this will be worth it.
Easter weekend (in bullets because I am lazy)
OK the real reason for the bullets is because it's super busy at work today but I still wanted to be sure to post about my weekend.
- We left MD on Thursday as soon as K got home from class and got to my aunt's house in Pinehurst, NC at 3:00 am. It was a long drive but I was glad we got it done at night.
- Hanna was very good in the car both on they way there are on the way home. She used to barf on long car trips so I was worried, but there were no incidents.
- Friday night we had fondue which is always fun and yummy. This was actually K and my 3rd Easter in a row having fondue. The past two years we have spent it alone and always did fondue for something different and fun.
- Saturday we did some shopping/browsing downtown and went out to dinner at a really good restaurant.
- Easter was spent in the car. It took forever to get back home so when we finally did we just ordered pizza and got caught up on the dvr.
- I also spent the weekend trying to convince K we needed to move to the South. I love the friendly people, cheaper home prices, quiet and the warm weather. Not to mention sweet tea!
- Why is it after going away for the weekend I get totally behind in everything I need to do for the week? For example, I don't think I will cook dinner all week just because I didn't have the weekend to menu plan/grocery shop.
- As usual, I failed epically at taking random pictures to document the trip.
How was your weekend?

road trip! and muffins!
Raspberry Muffins
3 POINTS each, makes 12 muffins.
4 Tbsp margarine, softened.
2 cups ready-to-eat crisp rice cereal, divided
1 1/2 cup(s) raspberries, divided
2/3 cup unpacked brown sugar, divided 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
2/3 cups buttermilk
How to make them: Preheat oven to 400ºF. Coat a 12-hole muffin tin with cooking spray or use liners. Place flour in a large bowl and rub in margarine with your fingers. Stir in 1 1/3 cups of cereal, 1 cup of raspberries and 1/2 cup of sugar. Combine eggs and milk in a small bowl; stir into flour-fruit mixture. Pour mixture into prepared tin; sprinkle with remaining raspberries (I put one whole raspberry on top of each muffin), cereal and sugar. Bake 25 minutes. Let stand 5 minutes before flipping onto wire rack to cool.
