attack of the stage mom

The last day of my Broadway Babies class was on Halloween morning which meant we had "rehearsal" for half the class then our "show" for the second half.

The kiddos arrived in their Halloween costumes, are were all looking very cute and surprisingly behaved during the rehearsal. I was optimistic that the show would go off with out a hitch.

When the rehearsal was over my co-director and our counselor took the kids for a brief potty break/drink from the water fountain while I got the theater ready and started bringing in the parents.

Now this is when the issue happened. Little Billy* is one of the cutest kids in the class. He is well behaved, knows all the songs and dances and is straight up adorable. I guess his mom has something against water fountains (little does she know he has been drinking out of it every week) because when she saw him out there she freaked out. He started crying and whining about drinking out of the water fountain and had to be coaxed on stage for the show.

These kids are mostly 3 so they really can't handle much in terms of preforming, but Little Billy had always done so well. Until the show. He was still upset about the water fountain so he basically just stood there. At one point our counselor asked him why he wasn't singing and he said "my parents don't want me to." Meanwhile in the audience his mom was making this big deal about mouthing the words and doing the motions herself.

After the show the kids and their families were milling around so I went up to them all to say bye, good job etc... Instead of telling him good job, Little Billy's parents and grandparents were asking him why he didn't sing and giving him shit about it. When I told him good job they all made sarcastic comments.

Hello people...he is 3...and probably would have done great if Stage Mom didn't freak out 5 minutes before the show started. To be honest, it put a bit of a damper on the whole show experience for me. Poor little guy.

And if her treatment of her son wasn't bad enough...as she was leaving Stage Mom said "Well he really liked the bat song the best," in this really bitchy tone. That was a song on the CD that we listened to but didn't preform. Like the reason he didn't sing was because we didn't do that song! Get real, lady.

*Obviously name has been changed.
